ONE year after Yellow Buses went into administration, the Echo looks back at pictures of when the company was thriving in the town.
The tramway company that later became Yellow Buses started trading in July 1902.
In 1930, Kinson and Holdenhurst became part of the County Borough of Bournemouth and this caused an expansion in the bus fleet. Previously the bus services had only been operating as ‘feeders’ to the tramway system since 1906, when it hit its peak capacity.
In 1933, the first trolley bus was tested and within the following few years, all trams were changed to this mode of transport. The trolley buses ran until 1969 when the overhead wires were taken down.
In 1985, Bournemouth Transport became a private limited company with the shares mostly owned by the Borough of Bournemouth.
Yellow Buses were sold by Bournemouth Borough Council to Transdev in late 2005, and in early in 2006, the company moved from its home of 53 years in Mallard Road to a £5m purpose-built facility on Yeomans Way.
