The A31 has reopened following a car fire earlier this evening. The carriageway heading towards Southampton was down to a single lane as fire crews dealt with the blaze, but after around an hour and a half, it has fully reopened.
Traffic was also slow westbound as drivers slow down to look at the fire.
Reader Sam Getliffe tweeted this picture of the vehicle, which was blocking the inside lane of the carriageway close to Stoney Cross.
A spokesperson from the Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service said two crews from Totton and Burley attended the scene. "We received a call at 4.43pm to a car on fire," she said. Motorists were warned of delays eastbound. However, shortly before 6pm, a spokesperson from Hampshire Constabulary said: "The vehicle has just been moved off the carriageway. "The road is now fully reopen and fire crews have left the scene. Nobody was injured and it is believed the fire was caused by a mechanical fault." After the road reopened, reports we received that traffic was trailing back to Picket Post.
