She said: “The early indications are that the Skoda driver may have suffered a medical episode.”
The spokesman said that the emergency services attempted to treat the 70-year-old man at the scene but he was pronounced dead at the roadside.
She added that the Vauxhall driver and his 40-year-old female passenger only suffered slight injuries.
The road was closed for several hours while investigations were carried out.
Witnesses to the collision or the manner of driving of either vehicle prior to the collision are asked to contact PC Gooding of the Dorset Police traffic department on 101.
