AN elderly motorist died at the scene of an accident in Poole yesterday, after the car he was driving careered across the pavement and ploughed into the front garden of a house.

No-one else was injured in the incident, which unfolded around 9.30am, quarter-of-a-mile from Broadstone Middle School.

The 70-year-old victim, who was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics, had been driving along Dunyeats Road in Broadstone when his car crossed the pavement and crashed through a hedgerow and fencing.

One neighbour told the Echo: “I’ve just heard that the driver has died. 

“It is terrible news and must be a shock for his family and friends. My thoughts are with them at this time.”

Police, firefighters and paramedics attended the accident, and the air ambulance also landed at a nearby cricket pitch.

Speaking to the Daily Echo at the scene, Dorset Police Sergeant Mark Farrow confirmed: “The driver of the vehicle was a 70-year-old male from Broadstone. Sadly he was declared dead by paramedics.

“The man’s next of kin have been notified and are being looked after by family liaison officers.

“We’d like to thank everyone for their patience while the investigation is carried out.”

Specially-trained police collision investigators were at the crash site yesterday in a bid to establish exactly what had happened.

While they carried out their investigations Dunyeats Road remained closed in both directions between the junctions of Ridgeway and Lower Golf Links Road.

The car, a grey Volvo XC60, was recovered shortly before midday.
Resident Terry Pardy said he was returning from the shops when he saw the air ambulance circling his house.

“I live just around the corner from Dunyeats Road and saw the air ambulance land on the cricket pitch. Someone said a car had gone into a house.

“I walked around the corner and the road was completely taped off and I could see the car in someone’s front garden. 

“There were lots of police and ambulance people there as well.”
