TERRAS boss David Oldfield described as “a really good workout” his team’s 5-1 victory over Southern Premier League South Weston-super-Mare.

Marlon Jackson opened the scoring for the Seagulls at Optima Stadium before Weymouth roared back to claim the spoils in the pre-season friendly.

Dan Matsuzaka, Tom Blair and Tom Bearwish all got on the scoresheet during the first half.

Brad Ash then converted the visitors’ fourth from the penalty spot after Keelan O’Connell was fouled in the box. A trialist then made it five after finding the top corner for Oldfield’s men.

Reflecting on the contest, the Weymouth boss told the club’s YouTube channel: “If I’m honest I don’t think it was a 5-1 game. I think it was very competitive.

“Weston scored first and we had to dig deep and we certainly had some problems to solve. We managed to take our chances.

“We must make sure we are focused on the season but it was a really good workout, a very tough game.

“We were made really welcome here, a club that’s really going places and doing well so it was a very tough encounter for us.”

Asked about the situation regarding trialists, Oldfield added: “We want to get a hungry, much smaller group than we had last year. In terms of the feel and the spirit around it, there was some good boys last year.

“But it’s certainly a rebuild and a new feel around the place here. All the trialists have done well, we have had some in who have stayed for longer than others but it’s certainly been a process to try to find some new players.”

The Terras take on rivals Dorchester Town in their final pre-season friendly on Saturday, before beginning the campaign against Tonbridge Angels in National South on August 6.
