A CAMPER van was damaged by fire near Wareham.
The fire service was called to reports of a vehicle fire on the A351 at Hyde, Wareham, at 7.40pm last night, Tuesday, August 8.
One crew from Wareham attended and found a camper van on fire.
Two breathing apparatus wearers used two hose reel jets to extinguish the fire quickly, which had caused significant damage to the camper van.
The crew was on scene until 9.15pm.
A spokesperson for Dorset and Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service said: “Last night one fire engine was sent to a camper van on fire just outside Wareham.
“Fire crews swiftly dealt with a fire and put it out quickly.”
The fire service issues the following advice for if your vehicle catches fire:
• Stop immediately, parking as safely as you can.
• Switch off the engine.
• Release the bonnet catch but don’t open.
• Get everyone away from the vehicle and stay well away.
• Dial 999 and ask for the Fire and Rescue Service.
• Warn oncoming traffic.
It says to never use water on an engine fire, as it can short out the wiring and spread any burning fuel.
A dry powder or foam fire extinguisher can be used, if it is safe to do so.
If the fire is in the engine compartment, do not open the bonnet, but aim the extinguisher through the radiator grille or under the lid.
