A HANDMADE 'bug city' is being repeatedly vandalised at a pond and gardens in Bournemouth.

In the quiet oasis of Coy Pond Garden, a miniature 'Bug City' skyline has been constructed on a couple of large tree stumps.

The coy pond and gardens are located in Branksome, Poole, which is an urban setting with exotic trees and riverside walks.

David Reeves is from Branksome and is one of more than a dozen volunteers who help conserve the idyllic gardens.

He built the bug city using scrap pieces of wood from his garage.

The wooden skyline sits on top of silver birch stumps, where a network of insects and bugs live below.

David said: "Since my creation this year, it has been attacked twice.

"It only takes them a couple of minutes to kick it over, but it takes me a whole morning to put it back together.

"Humanity is split into two tribes: one creates, and one destroys."

The 'Bug City' is part of the 'bug hotel' network, which includes three different styles of 'hotel' spread over the Coy Pond site.

It has been called a 'refuge' for the insects.

David said the site teaches the younger generation about sharing our environment with all sorts of wildlife.

He told the Echo: "It is important to have bugs and insects as they encourage more species of wildlife to visit the site."

A rockery has also been planted, with flowers for the pollinators, and a new hedge has been put in for Brimstone butterflies.

David is retired and volunteers at Coy Pond Gardens, where he enjoys planting plants and creating comical signs around the trees and wildlife at Coy Pond Gardens.

He said: "It is upsetting when people destroy my creations. I have to unscrew it and take it home to mend the shattered wood."

He added: "I can't keep doing it. It is a waste of time; I'd rather be gardening.

"If the damage continues, the 'buildings and road signs will have to be removed. This will be a pity, as the 'Bug City' has given pleasure to young and old alike."
