A CLAN of spooky vampires brought a chill to a sunny Poole beach for a film shoot.
Beach hut owners, sunbathers and walkers at Branksome Chine all stopped to stare as a group of around 70 Arts University College students recorded an imaginative re-working of Kate Bush’s Babooshka.
The ’70s star and her record label are even said to be interested in the film, which will be posted on YouTube.
In it, Babooshka – who is killed by a vampire bite in the 18th century – sets up a honey trap for her husband, returning each year to kill another man.
Director Gareth Corke said: “We see Babooshka in the 18th century and 2012.
“Here her clan are on the beach on the hunt for their next man.
“Then Babooshka will arrive and have the first bite of the victim.”
One girl fainted during the 10-hour shoot, which followed a day’s filming in the studio.
Gareth said: “We were hoping for a day that was overcast and typically it’s hot.
“Our clan are like the vampires of Twilight in that they can come into the light.
“It’s just a tip of the hat to Stephanie Meyer’s Twilight vampires.”
First year Costume with Performance Design students spent 10 weeks creating the outfits, designed by acclaimed costume designer Frances Tempest.
They also worked as models for other students, acted and worked as crew.
Frances, whose credits include the Calendar Girls movie and TV’s Robin Hood, said: “This has been a completely new experience for most of them.
“They have taken my designs as a starting point and really captured the spirit of those and made them come to life.”
Student Sarah Bennie, 20, made a corset, shirt and cape.
She said: “I’ve really loved the atmosphere and seeing the vampires with their umbrellas, all looking so white.
“It’s been incredible. I’ve never done anything like this before.”
Third year AUC actor Jake Baker, from Poole, plays the lead, Babooshka’s prey, dying in the water.
“It’s kind of twisted,” he said.
“She tracks down her husband’s great, great, great, great grandson because she’s got a grudge that he’s been unfaithful.”
