MANAGER Eddie Howe has urged Jayden Stockley to take his chance in pre-season by telling the young frontman: It is up to you.

Howe has promised to give the homegrown striker an opportunity to nail down a place in Cherries’ Championship squad for next term.

The Cherries boss will assess the 19-year-old and involve him during all of the club’s warm-up campaign.

Since being fast-tracked by Howe into the senior set-up, Stockley has experienced fluctuating fortunes.

The Poole-born forward hit the headlines when he was handed his Football League debut by Howe in October 2009 as a 16-year-old.

Howe rewarded Stockley with a five-year contract in November 2009, with Lee Bradbury then giving him an improved three-year deal in summer 2011.

But after being dropped to the development squad by Paul Groves, Stockley has seen his game-time limited and he finished last season on loan with Woking.

Stockley netted 14 goals during a productive spell with the Conference outfit and Howe is now ready to take a close look at him when his players return to training later this month.

Howe told the Daily Echo: “Jayden did very well at Woking and I think he has done well whenever he has been out on loan.

“It was a good time for him to go out on loan – he needed to play – and Woking was good for him and vice-versa.

“He now comes back into our thoughts and back into our group for pre-season. He will be with us for all of pre-season.

“He is someone that we have always liked, ever since I saw him as a 15-year-old, but now it is very much up to Jayden to perform and impress to see what the next step is for him. It may well be out on loan, it may well be closer to us. It will all depend on Jayden.”

Stockley has scored two goals for Cherries in two starts and 20 substitute appearances.

Howe added: “It will be interesting to see how he has developed from his spell at Woking and to also see how much improvement he has made.”
