CHERRIES boss Eddie Howe has welcomed the signing of experienced goalkeeper Lee Camp – and given his backing to rookie stopper Ryan Allsop.
Camp this morning penned a one-month loan deal from Premier League West Bromwich Albion ahead of joining Howe’s squad in training.
News of his signing was revealed exclusively by the Daily Echo last night with Camp expected to make his debut against Bolton at Dean Court on Saturday.
The 29-year-old has been drafted in due to injury to Darryl Flahavan and Stephen Henderson – and to give Allsop some respite following a difficult month for the 21-year-old.
Allsop, who was sent off at Leeds, lost his place after Henderson had been brought in from West Ham, only for the Irishman to sustain a dislocated shoulder at Nottingham Forest.
And after earning a recall for Cherries’ trip to Leicester, Allsop was culpable for the Foxes’ winner when his indecision allowed Jamie Vardy to score.
In an interview with the Daily Echo, Howe said he hoped the arrival of Camp would help with Allsop’s development.
Howe said: “He is an experienced goalkeeper who has played a lot of games in the Championship. I feel he will fit our style as well because he is very good with his feet. We are looking forward to working with him and are very thankful to West Brom for their help in securing the loan.
“We still like Ryan very much. He has had a very quick rise in the world of football and we feel this will benefit him. He will be working with an experienced goalkeeper and, with Darryl coming back to fitness, he just needs a bit of time to work on one or two things.
“When you consider how young he is and how far he has come in the game, he has a very bright future ahead of him so I see this as a positive not a negative for Ryan.”
Camp progressed through the ranks at hometown club Derby, making 98 league and cup appearances during five years with the Rams.
He joined QPR for around £300,000 in 2007 – following a successful loan spell at Loftus Road – and was ever present during his first season at the club.
Camp then moved to Nottingham Forest for £100,000 in 2009 and quickly established himself as first-choice at the City Ground. Forest’s player of the year in 2009-10, he also featured in the Championship team of the season.
In the summer of 2011, Camp was the subject of three failed bids by Swansea, the highest of which was reportedly £1.8million.
He made three appearances in the Premier League during a brief stay with Norwich City last season before signing for WBA two months ago as cover for England goalkeeper Ben Foster.
Capped five times by England at under-21 level, Camp has also won nine full caps for Northern Ireland. During his time at Derby, he also served Burton Albion, QPR and Norwich on loan.
