POOLE Pirates captain Ben Cook was named most improved rider of the year at the Australian Speedway Championship.
After the fifth and final round of action, Cook placed sixth in the overall rankings, with Rohan Tungate crowned national champion for the second time. Max Fricke and Jack Holder claimed podium finishes.
Cook finished above some well-known names, including Chris Holder, Sam Masters and Ryan Douglas, while brother Zach Cook ended in 12th.
Ben Cook was then presented with his most improved award, for his achievements both overseas and in Australia over the past 12 months.
Steve Baker gave him the shield at Gillman, with the winner having been chosen by a panel from across Australia.
The Cook brothers are set for another season with Poole in 2024, which begins in March.
