DORSET darter Scott Mitchell is set for a clash with four-time women’s world champion Lisa Ashton, after making a winning start at the World Seniors Championship.

‘Scotty Dog’ came through a tough battle with Kent’s Matt Clark, winning 3-1 in sets in the opening match of the tournament.

Both men suffered double trouble early on at the Circus Tavern, Mitchell eventually nicking the first set.

‘Superman’ Clark, who competed in six PDC World Championships and reached the 2008 Matchplay quarter-finals, hit back to level.

But a brilliant last-dart hit from Mitchell on double two secured a whitewash set three.

Mitchell then wrapped up the win, hitting his first 180 of the day in what proved to be the final leg, again pinning double two for the match.

He will now face ‘Lancashire Rose’ Ashton, who won 3-2 in her opening game against Welshman Michael Huntley.

The match takes place on Saturday afternoon in Purfleet, available to watch live via the BBC Sport website.

The two BDO legends have never met before in a competitive match.

The seniors tour is for players aged 50 and over, with the likes of Phil Taylor, John Henderson, Kevin Painter, John Part, Martin Adams and reigning champion Robert Thornton in the field at the worlds this year.
