WING wizard Marc Pugh produced a virtuoso performance to wow the Dean Court faithful and then set his sights on keeping Cherries fans richly entertained this season.
Pugh enjoyed a dream home league debut and gave supporters a tantalising glimpse of what could lay ahead by opening the scoring and giving Peterborough United the run-around on Saturday.
Recruited from Hereford United in the summer, the attacking midfielder enhanced his burgeoning reputation in the ruthless 5-1 demolition of Posh.
Having headed home Cherries’ first goal of the campaign, Pugh continued to showcase his talents as Anton Robinson and a Brett Pitman hat-trick put paid to the visitors.
While Pitman claimed the man-of-the-match bubbly, the efforts of Pugh and fellow winger Liam Feeney also had the club’s followers purring.
Pugh told the Echo: “It’s always nice to impress fans and that’s what I’m paid to do. I’ve got to create chances for others and score goals myself and, if I’m not performing, then I won’t be in the team.
“That’s what I want to do week in, week out and, hopefully, keep playing as well as I have been doing.
“I’m really looking forward to the future now and the next couple of games.”
Pugh, top scorer for the Bulls last term, added: “You’ve always got to set yourself a target and hopefully score a lot of goals. You’ve got to try to reach your maximum potential and I’m just looking to score as many goals as I can again this season.
“The frontmen are in the team to score goals but if we’re creating and scoring goals from the midfield as well, and even defenders chipping in with the odd goal or two, it helps out massively and gives everyone a big lift.”
Discussing Saturday’s win, he added: “We have to go into every game with confidence and I thought the lads were absolutely fantastic.
“The gaffer and Jason did their homework and it paid dividends. We exploited the weaknesses and it paid off in the end.
“We played brilliantly and I couldn’t fault anyone’s performance. We’ve gained so much confidence from that result. Winning 5-1 against Peterborough, when everyone looked in the paper they would have been thinking ‘Bournemouth must be a decent team’.
“We just have to take that into the game against Tranmere and play with the same belief and work ethic, and I’m sure we’ll go a long way.”
