A NEWS item in the Daily Echo (July 19) draws attention to the campaign by Philip Atley, chairman of the Keep Wimborne Town Green to get rid of the recently opened Waitrose store.
He proposes a poll of the town’s 3,425 electors. He suggests that the manager of Waitrose might like to make a contribution towards the cost of £2,689 to carry out this poll.
County council money is our money. A fair amount has already been spent by the county council on this campaign by a group of unelected people. I would think that our local shops and supermarkets would rather the money came through their shop doors. Those local people spending it, would certainly have something to show for it.
Philip Atley recognises that some people have come to accept it. I too, agree that Waitrose has been accepted, even praised for its input to the enjoyment of members of the general public.
I have seen no eagerness from the cricket club to return beside the river.
They appear to be happy playing on their new pitch and making good use of their new ancillary buildings.
Mr Atley has not put his name forward to become a councillor. His concern for the town must surely extend to being elected. His voice could then be heard adding to discussions in the proper place – the council chamber.
