POOLE’S Bryony Page has been named best in the world following a stellar performance at the 2023 World Trampoline Championships at the Utilita Arena in Birmingham.
In what looks like a huge step towards confirming her space at the Paris 2024 Olympics, the trampolining veteran and double Olympic medallist also secured a bronze medal in the synchro event, having competed alongside Izzy Songhurst, who also trains in Poole.
The event, which took place in front of a home crowd for the first time in 12 years, saw 1,000 gymnasts from over 40 countries compete across the three main disciplines and battle it out for the title of world champion.
Page’s final score of 56.680 landed her at the top of the podium, ahead of reigning Olympic champion Zhu Xueying of China and USA’s Jessica Stephens, who placed second and third, respectively.
The newly crowned world champion now has her sights set on the Paris 2024 Games.
The 32-year-old said: “I’m just over the moon. I was so nervous.
“I woke up really early in the morning with nerves. However, I’m super happy I was able to do the routine I wanted to.
“It was so special to do it in front of a home crowd because I may not get that opportunity again, so to do that and be part of it was just amazing”.
At last year’s World Championships in Sofia, Bulgaria, Page won individual silver, team silver and helped the British all-around mixed team win gold.
Commenting on the championships, Sarah Powell, CEO of British Gymnastics, said: “I am so thrilled to have seen our GB trampoline, tumbling and double mini-trampoline gymnasts enjoying the incredible experience of representing their country at the World Championships.
“The comradery, support and undeniable talent of each gymnast have been so spectacular to see.
“Bryony has led the team with experience, professionalism and skill and I am so pleased that she has taken home the title.
“I take huge pride in knowing that beyond our podium success, our gymnasts have made unforgettable memories here in Birmingham, and inspired so many.”
