CHERRIES ended their campaign with silverware after a 3-1 victory over Southampton’s under-21s in the final of the women's Hampshire Senior Cup.

While the club agonisingly missed out on the season’s main goal of promotion, defeating Saints represents back-to-back trophies in this competition for Steve Cuss’s side, having also knocked out the likes of Portsmouth and Moneyfields along the way.

Kenni Thompson and Lucy Cooper scored either side of a Kaylee Buckingham goal to put Cherries ahead at half-time at Aldershot Town’s EBB Stadium.

And the win was sealed late on, courtesy of substitute Erin Bloomfield.

Cuss made just one change to the side which drew at Exeter City on the final day of the league campaign, Olivia Venditto coming in for Kelci Bowers.

Goalkeeper Mia King did well to turn over an early Gemma McGuinness strike, before the latter saw a penalty shout waved away having gone down under a challenge from Kate Jeffery.

But Jeffery was penalised in the box soon after, her arm blocking a shot from Thompson. The winger then stepped up herself from 12 yards, sending King the wrong way.

Scores were levelled when the sister of Cherries sub Alisha Buckingham, Kaylee, headed home from a Daisy Beard cross.

But Cherries were back ahead before the break, Cooper bundling home from close range.

Thompson and Molly Barron-Clark came close to extending the lead, while at the other end, Jeffery’s effort struck the woodwork.

McGuinness then hit the post as Cherries tried to seal the win in the closing stages, something they duly did as Bloomfield came off the bench to head in.
