AMY Winehouse was famously once a band member, remarking that she began her career ‘singing for old people in the back room of a pub in Rayners Lane’.
The pub was the celebrated Rayners Hotel and the band she was singing with was the National Youth Jazz Orchestra, one of Britain’s longest running and most successful ensembles for young people, who return to Lighthouse in Poole on Saturday, playing big band jazz and offering a unique learning experience for under 25s.
Founder Bill Ashton began the organisation in 1945 seeking to offer young musicians the opportunity to rehearse, write and gain experience of prestigious live performance in venues and festivals across the country.
The band is on stage at 7.30pm.
