WHEN Roy Orbison died in 1988, it was left to others to bring his music to the stage. No easy task, but thanks to Barry Steele, Roy’s unique sound lives on.
Steele, who has performed to rave reviews across the world, not only sounds like the man, he looks like him too, complete with trademark dark glasses and Orbison style, and is coming to the Regent Centre in Christchurch with ‘Roy Orbison and Friends’ on Saturday, April 28.
It includes many of Roy’s memorable hits, such as Only the Lonely, Crying and Running Scared. With rollicking numbers such as Ooby Dooby, Uptown and You Got It, Barry and his five piece band, who recreate Orbison’s backing group The Travelling Wilburys, (originally containing such icons as George Harrison and Bob Dylan) give a performance that will keep you dancing in your chair.
Add to the mix the sounds of The Shadows, Ray Charles and Jerry Lee Lewis and there is a fabulous fusion of rock ‘n’ roll and contemporary musical genius all on one stage.
