WE sat open-mouthed staring at the cinema screen with a mixture of shock and awe. This was spine-tingling, adrenaline-pumping and compulsive viewing. But this wasn’t some all-action Hollywood blockbuster.

This was the Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour, a series of short films depicting real people doing unbelievable –some might say – insane adventures! We were taken on a three hour journey, climbing, kayaking, mountain biking and skiing in some of the world’s most extreme and beautiful environments but all from the comfort of our chairs.

The tour is a showcase of the best films from the annual Banff Mountain Film Festival and it visits 285 communities and 35 countries across the globe.

One of the highlights was Crossing The Ice – following two very funny Australians, the Ant and Dec of adventurers, who are racing a Norwegian explorer to be the first to ski unassisted from the edge of Antarctica to the South Pole and back again. This heart-warming and gruesome film is testimony to the power of friendship and humour in adversity.

No wonder this annual tour has become a sell-out. Roll on next year.
