Talented young dancers from the London Studio centre presented three contrasting ballets in this 21st anniversary tour. Directed by former Royal Ballet principal, maragret barbieri this was dancing at its best.
The programme opened with Salzburg Divertimento featuring five young ladies and three men. They danced in elegant classical style to the music of Mozart, expressing light-hearted flirtations.
The second piece was Sommeil by Christopher Marney, an abstract ballet to the music of Gabriel Faure. It is a dreamy nocturne for two couples sharing all the moonlit qualities of a world that is half-dream, half waking.
The dancers wander between dream and reality, from sleepwalking solos into tender duets and reflective trios.
The final piece was Tchaikovsky’s Ballet Fantasy by matthew Hart in which we see the composer frantically attempting to prevent his Sleeping beauty, Swan Lake and Nutcracker turned upside down.
Thankfully it all ends happily ever after.
