The setting for Ring Round the Moon is the winter garden of a country house where a ball is to be staged and, as so often in Anouilh’s plays, a female innocent is thrust into a society of wealthy aristocrats.

The simple but elegant setting was extremely effective and the costumes superb.

This is a talented cast with no weak performances. Sean Beaumont doubles as twins and even though they are identically dressed, he manages to distinguish between the kind, muddled Frederic and the smooth, controlling Hugo. This was the performance of the night for me and I can only marvel at the smooth handling of the two characters. You could almost believe that they were two different people playing the parts.

Kimberley Scott played Isabelle with tenderness and sincerity which made the whole audience warm to her and be delighted when she chose the right twin.

There were a number of vividly drawn and memorably played supporting roles.

Dawn Hollington was in vintage comic form as Isabelle's vulgar, garrulous mother, played to great effect.

Rebecca Christie supplies plenty of bitchy glamour as the disgruntled fiancée, not least in a splendid cat-fight with Isabelle, while Kevin Dicker, who also directed, was excellent as Patrice.

A theatrical trifle, perhaps, but one stuffed with good things. Well done Ferndown Drama Group.
