PAUL WELLER has never been a man to follow convention.
Since splitting up The Jam at the height of their fame, Weller has kept his fans guessing with each new musical direction.
Long-term fans of the Modfather, who have appreciated his deeply musical style of pop, will have no problems absorbing the frantic and somewhat chaotic vibe of Sonik Kicks.
While Weller’s latest album doesn’t quite have the arc of 2008’s 22 Dreams or epic quality of 2010’s Mercury Music-nominated Wake Up The Nation, his 11th solo album is still typically confident.
Sparkling indie pop tracks such as Attic and Dangerous Age sit next to abstract soundscapes and folkier numbers.
The album also features appearances from former musical rivals Noel Gallagher and Graham Coxon, as a jubilant, slightly crazed, Britpop sensibility is ever-present.
For those looking for a burst of frenetic pop cross-crossing genres, this album will do it.
