SO who or exactly what are the Ozric Tenticals?
Born out of the 1983 Stonehenge free festival and named after an imaginary cereal packet, annual Glastonbury favorites the Ozrics blend a unique psychedelic mix of ambient jazz, electronic, dub, acid, rave, festival, progressive rock music.
Totally unique, they’ve been a legend in the UK and Europe for well over 25 years, they’ve released 28 albums and sold more than one million albums worldwide despite never being signed to a major label.
They’re here tonight as part of the Paper Monkeys tour and to promote the new record of the same name released last October. The lineup has never remained static over the years, but it’s definitely business as usual as soon as the Ozrics take to the stage.
We are treated to a highly energetic performance made up of a psychedelic mixture of thumping bass lines, trippy sound affects along with funky keyboard and effects-laden guitar work, which constantly change key signature and tempo throughout the same track and take on an epic feel.
That’s only half the story though as the visual element is as important and intrinsic as the sound at an Ozrics gig and we are hypnotised by a full on light display of mind-bending images and film projected on to the back of the stage.
The night is topped off by long lost founder member Jon Egan joining the band on stage for the encore to add his flute into the mix of a seemingly never ending instrumental.
The sonic and sensory assault left the audience with an all round satisfying experience that has displayed the subtle evolution of this bands legendary sound.
