IT MAY be her first role since she underwent major throat surgery but Connie Fisher showed no signs of losing her leading lady status when Wonderful Town opened at The Mayflower this week.
Confidently taking to the stage, the former star of the West End smash hit The Sound of Music and winner of the BBC’s How Do You Solve a Problem like Maria? put in a sparkling performance.
Arriving in the bright city lights of New York, the musical comedy follows the scrapes that aspiring writer Ruth Sherwood – played by Fisher – and her wannabe actress sister Eileen get into after leaving their home town of Columbus, Ohio.
Supported by a full orchestra, highlights included the very pretty songbird-like vocals of Lucy van Gasse, who plays Eileen. Mentions should also be given to Michael Xavier.
If it’s light-hearted feel good fun you’re after, Wonderful Town is just the ticket. Runs until Saturday.
