IT has always been England’s national spirit, but gin is getting a modern makeover.
Made famous by James Bond, the “shaken, not stirred” gin martini cocktail is enjoying a revival as classic British style comes back into fashion.
Having recently taken over as general manager at The Print Room, Simon Scarborough is heading up a new gin afternoon tea, alongside a range of gin cocktails.
Simon is drawing on his experiences in London’s prestigious Mayfair district to bring “an added touch of class” to the Bournemouth town centre venue.
Two afternoon teas are on offer, starting from today – a sweet version, served with either a Bloom gin and tonic with strawberry garnish, and a savoury selection, accompanied by a Hendricks gin and tonic with cucumber garnish.
But The Print Room also offers a range of mixology classes, where customers can learn how to make a range of cocktails, including the gin drinks which Simon is hoping the venue will become known for.
“The Print Room is the most amazing place,” he said.
“It has the long bar and I see that as a bar that people need to be drinking at.
“I see this as the best gin martini and I see gin as being part of The Print Room. It’s a style thing.
“It doesn’t go out of fashion. It’s such a classic, glamorous building and it doesn’t date.”
Simon, who admits he is a gin fan, added the revival of the British spirit tied in nicely with last year’s London Olympic Games and the Diamond Jubilee.
“We are proud to be British,” he added.
