SPENDING your lunch break in Tapas Plus is likely to get you in trouble with your boss. Even the most regimented, self- disciplined and work conscious of employees will struggle to resist the restaurant's ability to goad you into feeling like you're on Spanish time.

The Mediterranean ambience, the extensive wine list, the choice of Spanish beers and their sun-trap of a conservatory succeed in bringing a touch of mañana mañana to your day.

Coupled with the friendly, unhurried service and it would be quite easy to inadvertently return to work late afternoon, or not at all.

And it's not just the ambience that makes this restaurant worth a visit.

The menu is extensive and there are a few dishes on the specials board, which won't make for a speedy decision. However, there's no hurry.

After a casual debate over a few pints of Cruzcampo my cousin and I opted for the Pan Con Tomate (garlic bread with tomato), Patatas Bravas (spicy potatoes), Pimientos Rellenos (peppers with squid and prawns in bechamel sauce), Higaditos de Ave (chicken liver and bacon) and Albonigas de Carne (meatballs in spicy tomato sauce and cheese).

Suffice to say this was more than enough food, even for two hungry people.

While we waited for our tapas to arrive the friendly waitress brought over a basket of bread and some olives to nibble on.

Happily, however, the chef wasn't on Spanish time, although there was no questioning the authenticity of the food. The peppers and meatballs went down the best, but all the dishes were full of flavour and tasted superb. The only criticism was that the tomato garlic bread was served cold, although in the grand scheme of things this is pernickety considering how good everything had been, especially for £23.15.
