DEBATING the virtues of blended wines compared to single grape varieties can often lead to a fiery exchange in certain circles.

Supporters of blended wines will champion the likes of Rioja, Champagne and Châteauneuf du Pape, while those on the other side of the fence will remind you of fine single grape varieties such as Burgundy, Barolo and Australian Shiraz.

But we believe it’s best to make up your own mind, which is why we’ve unearthed some of our favourites from both camps. This week’s selection explores blended wines, while next week we’ll be focusing on the single grape varieties.

Muga Rioja Blanco 2010 £8.99 when you buy 2+ bottles Majestic

Although it is the reds that receive the most plaudits in Rioja, the whites can sometimes be just as thrilling due to the myriad styles they can produce. These can range from zesty fruit-led, to rich, complex and oaked. This falls slightly between the both categories, with vibrant green apples over a spicy and slightly buttery mouth feel. Great with hot chorizo.

Crozes-Hermitage Blanc 2009 £10.49 M&S

A northern Rhône classic, made from a blend of Marsanne and Roussanne. Dry and full flavoured showing ripe peaches backed up by limey acidity and a slight nutty flavour on the finish. Like white Rioja, these northern Rhône whites can easily be overlooked but most definitely should not, especially when paired with chicken provencal.

Tagus Creek Cabernet Sauvignon Aragónez 2008 £4.55 Waitrose until May 24

A great blend of the international Cabernet Sauvignon and local Aragónez (also known as Tempranillo) this red from the Ribatejo region of Portugal offers a lot of bang for your buck, especially at this unbeatable price point. Juicy, ripe black fruits are rounded off by smooth tannins and a fresh finish and a hit with meat straight off the barbeque.

Marananga Dam GSM 2005 £11.99 M&S

A warming and full-bodied blend of Grenache Shiraz and Mourvedre (more commonly known as GSM) hailing from Australia, via the southern Rhône valley. Made by star producer Torbreck for M&S, the wine shows lovely deep plummy aromas which follow through into ripe blackberries and cassis on the palate. Delicious.
