AS we enter the second week of Wimbledon, there’s still time to enjoy some strawberries and cream. Although champagne is always a winning combination, why not give one of the following a go to serve up an ace game, set and (wine) match.
Brown Brothers Moscato Rosa 2009 £4.97 Waitrose Wine
A delightful fresh and fruity pink slightly sparkling number made from a blend of Muscat and a small dose of the hybrid, Cienna, grapes. Full of freshly picked berry aromas with a slight hint of Turkish delight. These then give way to a sweet and fruity mouth-feel with creamy strawberry flavours – so what better to pair this than a bowl of Wimbledon’s finest?
Hermits Hill Botrytis Semillon 2008 £6.99 M&S Wine
A real sweet treat made from noble-rotted Semillon grape varieties, which are deliberately left on the vine to slowly rot and intensify flavours and sugars. The result is a decadent sticky wine that is full of candied apricot and honeycomb flavours and a remarkable freshness that keeps the wine from turning into sugar water in your mouth.
Andrew Quady ‘Essencia’ Orange Muscat 2007/08 £9.99 (37.5cl bottle) Majestic
An outrageously tasty and rich wine that is quite literally, a dessert in a glass. Vibrant and rich, this lightly fortified wine made by legendary Californian sweet wine expert Andrew Quady just oozes self-indulgence. Bursting with ripe peach and pineapple flavours and a hint of orange blossom on the nose. Hugely appealing and one that will go hand in hand with fruit-based desserts or biscotti.
De Saint Gall Blanc de Blancs Premier Cru Brut Champagne NV £19.30 currently at M&S Wine
If it’s only Champagne to be served with the strawberries then look no further than this elegant 100 per cent Chardonnay number. Rich and creamy and full of sumptuous slightly toasty and biscuit flavours, this is guaranteed to impress and an utter bargain at under £20 a bottle (as part of a case of 6).
