THIS week we hunt down the best autumn buys currently available on your supermarket and wine store shelves.

The Ned Sauvignon Blanc 2011 down to £6.99 when you buy two or more, Majestic

A now modern-day classic wine, this Marlborough sauvignon blanc shows everything you expect from the region; gooseberry and passion fruit flavours combined with ultra-zippy freshness.

Sip a glass of this with a warm goats’ cheese salad and dream our warmer autumn weather might return.

De Bortoli DB Selection Verdelho 2009

Verdelho is an old native Portuguese grape used primarily for Madeira wines, which has found a mini-cult status since arriving in Australia. It’s often richly flavoured and aromatic which makes it the perfect alternative to those who are bored with chardonnay. Full of lovely lemon zest and herby aromas, the palate is rich and succulent with orchard fruit flavours.

Great served with a plate of pesto roasted vegetable pasta.

Boschendal Lanoy Cabernet Sauvignon 2007 down to £6.64, Tesco

Boschendal is located in Stellenbosch, and this cabernet sauvignon is full of all the rich, ripe fruit flavours you would expect from the cape – bursting with cassis and blackberry.

Additional layers of complexity are added by a hint of pepper and liquorice. The South Africans would probably enjoy this wine with burgers and sausages straight off the barbie, but it’s also great with a roast dinner by the fire in our less than pleasant climes.

Bellingham Mocha Java Merlot 2010 down to £5.99 when you buy two or more Majestic

With a name like Mocha Java Merlot you would be wise in thinking there might be a coffee link in there somewhere. You would indeed be correct, winemaker Niel Groenewald, produced this wine by fermenting merlot in French oak barrels which due to the wine’s volatile state makes this wood integration result in a rich, chocolatey and coffee bean intermingled red.

This combined with the opulent red cherry and blackberry flavours make this an absolute steal at under £6.
