WHILE internet forum Tripadvisor has its fair share of quirks and foibles, it’s clear that the growing popularity of new Thai favourite Tiien is making its mark locally.

Indeed, the restaurant’s launch last year certainly landed with a veritable thud on the local map, attracting a crowd who you hope will continue to support the restaurant.

Unlike some whose offering is a triumph of style over substance, Tiien delivers on every level.

Located next door to the imposing Marriott Highcliff Hotel, Tiien starts making the effort the moment you step through the door, a warm welcome from its friendly staff complemented by the sophisticated, relaxing bar area.

The restaurant has been officially blessed by Pra Arejarn Utai, a Buddhist Monk from Thailand, his blessing promising to bring luck to the restaurant and its diners.

But the inspiration for its success will surely come from the kitchen, from where head chef Pithaya Pongpan, pictured left in his kitchen, has masterminded a fascinating menu with magical tastes, whatever your needs.

The chef sources authentic Thai ingredients to produce sublime flavours with something for all tastes including starters, a great choice of salads, soups, curries, stir-fried dishes, fish, noodles, rice and vegetable dishes.

In addition to the main restaurant and lounge bar there’s a private room beautifully decorated in gold leaf, which is ideal for private celebrations.

The lounge bar itself is a sophisticated setting to enjoy a cocktail. The colourful bar stools and striped loungers are made from recycled pineapple paper.

From here a door leads out to the terrace which, on a warm day is perfectly positioned to soak up the sun.

Tiien may well be promoted as a ‘fusion’ restaurant, but don’t let this 21st century affectation put you off.

This is a classic Thai restaurant that just happens to look like a million dollars; modern, comfortable, stylish and supremely on the mark.
