WITH Easter looming, we round up our favourite wines for the occasion and answer the perennial question of which wine you should pair with milk chocolate eggs.
Señorio del Aguila, Gran Reserva 2001 down to £5.99 when you buy any 2 still Spanish wines, Majestic. Food on Easter Sunday should mean lamb (and if the sun is shining then barbequed lamb it is!). Traditionally Rioja is the perfect match, with the silky fruit flavours and supple tannins just melting away the tender meat. This wine hails from the lesser-known region of Cariñena, east of Rioja, and is a top quality red showing gorgeously mature red fruit and leather aromas and elegant flavours at a stunning price.
Perrier-Jouët Grand Brut NV £25 Majestic
A classic and delightful champagne ideal for brunch time sipping. Composed from a blend of the classic grape trio of champagne – pinot noir, pinot meunier and chardonnay resulting in gloriously fresh lemon and toasted pineapple aromas which give way to charming fruity flavours. Try with eggs benedict.
Billecart-Salmon Sous Bois NV £65 harveynichols.com
This is pure champagne heaven. Not the cheapest option, but this knocks the socks of its rivals with its effortless elegance.
Fermented and made entirely in oak gives it a wonderfully round and creamy texture and marries honeycomb coated fruit with a long, savoury but fresh finish.
For a real treat try this with creamy, garlic and thyme roasted chicken.
Martinez Marsala Riserva Dolce 5 year old £6.49 M&S
Made from the local grillo and inzolia grapes, this classic Sicilian fortified wine is full of sweet figgy fruit and plum flavours and a long, nutty finish. The bittersweet chocolatey hints make this our eggs-traordinary wine match (sorry, couldn’t resist) with both milk and dark chocolate eggs.
