HAILED as ‘the finest choreographer British modern dance has ever known’, the Richard Alston Dance Company makes its eagerly awaited return to Poole this month, using a diverse collection of composers for his four performances.

Shimmer is danced to the music of Ravel, played live.

Julien Macdonald’s fabulous, jewel-encrusted cobweb costumes illuminate dazzling streaks of limpid choreography in a ravishingly beautiful piece of theatre.

In Memory is an intimate and quietly intense piece for six dancers, choreographed by Robert Cohan at his most succinct and powerful.

The music is Hindemith’s spare and expressive Sonata for unaccompanied viola.

Shuffle It Right features private recordings made by the American songwriter Hoagy Carmichael, who himself sings, whistles and plays piano on them.

The songs scurry along with wry little licks and punched-out, syncopated rhythms.

The programme is completed by a new duet, Other Than I, to music by Francois Couperin and choreographed by Martin Lawrence. The performance is taking place at Lighthouse in Poole.

Venue spokesman Paul Tucker said: “Richard Alston is quite simply one of the most musical choreographers in the world.”

Richard Alston Dance Company is at Lighthouse on April 27 and 28 at 7.30pm.
