When you think cosy wooden lodge with a burning log fire, most of us would instantly think of faraway places such as the Alps.

But, there is a hidden treasure waiting for us nestled in the North Cornish village of Portreath.

The luxury five star coastal destination offers fully equipped luxury log cabins, complete with a wood burning stove and beautiful sea views.

For our group, one of the great factors was that it only took two hours door to door and, arriving slightly frazzled from a busy working week and having two toddlers in our party, we felt like we stepped into a retreat the instant we arrived.

The impressive lodges sit high on the hill overlooking the Atlantic Ocean and on a cold March evening it was warm, cosy and inviting.

Meaning ‘view of the sea’, Gwel an Mor has struck the perfect combination of offering these beautiful lodges where you feel like you’ve got away from the world, but which also have a great restaurant and facilities just a short walk from your door for those who want a night off from domestic chores.

The restaurant was inviting and offered a wide range of meals that you could either eat in or take-away if you fancied a night in the lodge.

Once we’d settled in (and put the children to bed) we found the outdoor hot tub. Now, although it was a chilly night, it was absolutely bliss to jump in and enjoy the night stars whilst soaking up the atmosphere.

The next morning we felt like we were discovering the magic inside the lodge all over again when the sunlight flooded in through the sun deck and filled the light and bright rooms. All the eco-friendly lodges are designed to be family friendly which includes stair gates and other useful bits such as cots which made our stay stress free.

It is not surprising the resort, with its iconic Scandinavian style wooden lodges, is award-winning as the living area is spacious with simple but cosy decor and luxurious right the way from the bathroom design to the bed linen.

What I didn’t expect was the wildlife activities at the resort in their very own Wildlife and Conservation Centre. We spent a fascinating afternoon meeting their resident owls and visiting their other rescued animals who are looked after all year round at the park. It was popular with both families, children and adults and the passionate staff were a real asset to the destination. Following that, we took a walk on the famous South West Coast Path to Portreath and took advantage of this beautiful beach.

It was a great day despite the cold temperatures.

Not surprisingly, being England, it rained on the Sunday. But in actual fact we were pleased to stay cosy inside watching old films in the morning and later on took advantage of the clubhouse’s indoor pool to keep the toddlers entertained.

I was lucky enough to take a visit to the Wellbeing Spa where I had a fantastic full body massage that left me feeling relaxed, energised and as if I had been at a relaxation resort for a week.

After just three days we were sad to leave and felt as if we could have stayed for a week and still not discovered everything on offer.

It would be absolutely perfect for family groups or friends wanting to get away and enjoy a relaxing and luxurious week in one of Cornwall’s beauty spots. Gwen An Mor was cosy and inviting even on a cold March weekend, but I can imagine it would come alive in the summer time.
