Sign in to add a tributeI am greatly saddened to hear that Alan Melly (as I knew him) has passed. Quite simply, I owe the wonderful life I am lucky enough to be living through my flute playing, to Alan who importantly was my very first teacher. At the time, I couldn’t wait for my weekly flute lessons with him, and the additional flute classes brought yet further excitement; I remember both as being pure joy, combined with fun, aspiration, application and the occasional tiniest healthy touch of competition. Now, as a flute teacher myself, I realise just how crucial it is to be in the hands of a teacher who is themselves a master and therefore able to plant the very best seeds from which a fine technique and musician can develop in their students.
I know I am just one of many wind players who owe all they have achieved to Alan’s fine teaching. How lucky we all were.
