FESTIVITIES marked the beginning of Christmas in Wimborne at the weekend.

Crowds of people turned out for the annual yuletide celebrations in the town, which kicked off with carols around the Christmas tree in the new Square.

And the event has boosted charity efforts in the town.

Music was provided by a brass band from Allenbourn Middle, Cranborne Middle and Queen Elizabeth’s schools while choristers from the Wimborne Minster choir sang carols.

The lights were switched by the mayor of Wimborne Minster, Cllr John Burden and chairman of Wimborne Minster and District Chamber of Trade, Eileen Worth.

They were helped by competition winners from St John’s and Wimborne First Schools with stars from Cinderella, the Tivoli’s pantomime also making a special appearance.

The Mayor said: “It all went very well. The music from the school children and choristers was very, very good and played exceptionally well.

“It was a great event in the new Square and the children who helped switch on the lights were also excited.”

And a collection of £296 will go to the Mayor’s charities – Wimborne Guides, Wimborne Scouts and The Planet.
