Steven Spielberg’s civil war drama Lincoln leads the charge at this year's Oscars after receiving 12 nominations.
Daniel Day-Lewis has picked up a nomination for best actor in the biopic for his portrayal of the 16th President of the United States.
Ang Lee's adaptation of Life of Pi came in second with 11 nominations, while Silver Lining Playbook, starring Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence, surprised by collecting eight nominations. The rom-com became the first film to win nods in all four acting categories for more than 30 years.
Other films up for best picture include Les Miserables, Django Unchained, Zero Dark Thirty, Beasts of the Southern Wild, Argo and French language film Amour.
Naomi Watts has been nominated for her role in The Impossible, the real-life story of a family caught up in the 2004 Boxing Day tsunami.
Singer Adele has been nominated for her James Bond theme Skyfall, while the film, which made £1bn worldwide, picked up four nominations in the technical categories.
The awards ceremony takes place on February 24.
