STUDENTS at Portfield School have planted a tree in the school grounds in their bid for Eco-School status.

The pupils planted an English Royal Oak in the grounds, which was donated by the Woodland Trust, and students have made cards to mark their trees.

Tyler Collins, Portfield School head teacher, said: “So far, we have started to make progress in two main sections – the environment and recycling.

“As well as planting these trees, we have also had two compost bins donated to the school and classes will be planting vegetables in the Spring.

“On the recycling front, we are making recycling bins for each class, encouraging students to use these as much as possible,” he said.

“Our aim is to gain the Eco-Schools’ bronze award this term and the silver by the end of the school year.

“Then in September, we will work towards the Green Flag award, all in an effort to not only help the environment but to teach our students the importance of looking being eco-friendly.”
