DEVELOPER Eddie Mitchell is proposing to build a strikingly modern restaurant and bar within the main car park at Sandbanks beach in Poole.
He has submitted plans for a three-storey building with views across Poole Harbour on the site of a council-owned bungalow near the car park entrance.
In 2006, Mr Mitchell put forward ambitious plans for a 100-metre high spire with an observation deck called Skywalk Tower on the site of the crazy golf course at Sandbanks. The scheme was later withdrawn.
Andrew Flockhart, strategic director at Borough of Poole, said: “The council has registered a planning application for 89 Banks Road to demolish the existing building and replace it with a three-storey bar and restaurant.
“This application will be dealt with by our planning team.
“The land in question is owned by Borough of Poole and includes a former lodge which is occupied by a tenant.
While the council has been notified formally that an application has been submitted on land the council owns, we have not been contacted in recent years by the applicant for a discussion about this matter.”
Mr Mitchell’s company Seven Developments specialises in luxurious contemporary seaside homes such as the Thunderbird house in Branksome Park.
Ken Sanson, chairman of the Sandbanks Association, said: “We shall have to wait and see how the council deals with the plan.”
