ENTHUSIASTIC cyclists have thrown their weight behind a new cycle scheme in Christchurch.
The weekly rides from Highcliffe Castle are free and have been organised by Christchurch and East Dorset Partnership.
More than 20 people braved the cold weather to take part in the first ride on January 14, with the volunteer-led expeditions setting off from the castle every Monday at 10am.
The rides are free and last no more than an hour, using quiet lanes, roads and off-road cycle tracks and each ride is led by a different volunteer so the routes will vary but they always finish with a sociable cup of tea or coffee.
Marc Thompson, recreation ranger for Christchurch and East Dorset Partnership said: “This is a free, fun and sociable way for people to keep fit and stay active.
“We were delighted that so many people came along for the first few rides in January, despite the cold temperatures, and hope to see more people join the group as the rides continue into spring and summertime.”
The rides are part of the Activate 1000 scheme.
No special equipment is necessary but people taking part are advised to wear suitable clothing for the weather and in which they can comfortably ride a bike.
Bikes are available to hire for £4.
