THE man accused of killing Spanish student Sergio Retamar Marquez in his Bournemouth flat is currently not fit to enter a plea, a court heard today.

Karl Addo, 29, of no fixed address, is charged with the murder of the 23-year-old at the flat in Lansdowne Road on July 17 last year.

Sergio was found dead in the flat he shared with Addo.

A post mortem examination revealed Sergio had died from multiple stab wounds to the chest.

Addo was due to appear at Winchester Crown Court today to enter a plea to the charge of murder but prosecutor Nigel Pascoe QC said Addo had not yet recovered.

He said Addo was currently a patient at Broadmoor Hospital and that a consultant psychiatrist said it would be another three to six months before he would be in a position to make his diagnosis.

"The patient has a very long way to go,” he said.

He added: "Nothing can be done at the present time until the patient has recovered."

Judge Guy Boney QC remanded Addo in custody under section 48 of the Mental Health Act.

He set the trial date for December 9.

Sergio was working as a waiter at the Britannia Hotel in Meyrick Road, Bournemouth, when he died.

He came from Coin near Malaga on the south coast of Spain and had previously studied at the former United World School of English before a biking accident saw him returned home.

It is understood that he had only just moved back to find work when he died.

Sergio’s body was repatriated to Spain in August and hundreds of people attended his funeral at the cemetery church in Coin at the start of September.

The student’s funeral followed two days of official mourning declared by mayor of Coin Fernando Fernandez Tapia-Ruano.
