THERE hasn’t been this much interest in trotters since Del Boy and Rodney called it a day.
The 11 cute newcomers were born to Daisy, a Kune Kune pig, at Purbeck’s Farmer Palmers attraction nine days ago.
Staff arrived in the morning to find Daisy had gone into labour without them, and had already given birth to 11 of her dozen-strong litter.
Sadly, the runt of the litter died shortly afterwards but staff are confident these squealers will prove a top visitor attraction.
Farm park assistant Emma Shaw said: “We were surprised there was originally 12 of them as it was Daisy’s first litter.
“She’s quite a small pig so we were expecting about four of five piglets. What was amazing was she didn’t wait for staff to turn up, she went ahead and gave birth on her own overnight. She’s proving to be a brilliant mum.
“We’re having a bit of a baby boom here at the moment. Both of our cows are pregnant and we’re lambing as well.”
From February 16, for half term, staff will be setting up a ‘Trotter Time’ event, when children will be able to get up close and personal with the piglets.
Farm park co-founder Phillip Palmer added: “Daisy’s a great mum and we’re really amazed how well she did on her own, especially as it was her first ever litter.”
The piglets are currently on show in the animal barn, where they’re proving a bit hit with visiting youngsters.
Emma explained: “At the moment visitors can see them, but not touch. Mum gets up and all the piglets come squealing out, get fed, then run about manic for about five minutes before going and having another sleep.”
