TALENTED youngsters at a Christchurch school are putting the final touches to their upcoming theatre extravaganza.

Students at Twynham School in Christchurch have been hard at work preparing for their performances of Thoroughly Modern Millie in March.

The cast and crew will be treading the boards at the Regent Centre for the shows from Thursday March 7 until Saturday March 9 at 7.30pm with a matinee at 2.30pm on Saturday.

The glamorous production is set in New York in 1922 and tells the story of young Millie Dillmount who has just moved to the city in search of a new life. Depicting the changes of the time – women entering the workforce and adaptations of social behaviour – the show is jam-packed with songs and dance numbers including frisky flappers and vile villains.

The cast and crew of about 100 students include youngsters from year nine to sixth formers.

Kevin Cook, head of creative arts at Twynham School said: “This will be our fourth show in eight years.

“Previously we have performed Guys and Dolls, West Side Story and My Fair Lady.

“This is a huge event for any school – going to a theatre and selling tickets to the general public.

“I’ve taught in Christchurch for 16 years and know of no other school that has done this, so it really is something special.”

He added: “What’s really good about going to the Regent Centre is members of the public can see what we’re doing – not just families or friends.

“There are a few nerves but I’m so proud of everyone.”

Mr Cook praised director Simon Meredith and choreographer Claire Blackmore for their tireless efforts and urged everyone to support the school by purchasing a ticket.
