Police were called at 10.45am to the shore at Canford Cliffs after dog walker Jason Edwards spotted it while walking his dog Bibi.
Beach wardens were called to the scene and the area around the grenade cordoned off.
A police spokesman said it was thought that the grenade was “very old” and embedded in a rock. It was heavily corroded.
Bomb disposal teams were called and the beach closed for several hours until they arrived.
They carried out a controlled explosion shortly before 3pm and the beach and prom was then reopened.
