THIS double-seater bike, with the red handlebars, will be among 100 different types at the launch of the “biggest ever” cycling campaign to hit Bournemouth.

A penny farthing will also be among the weird and wonderful bikes in town tomorrow for the launch of the Getting About scheme with many available to try out for free.

The Bournemouth council project is being officially launched at Bournemouth Square and the Triangle and students at Harewood College have already heard about the project and had a chance to try out the double-seater bike.

Cllr Michael Filer, cabinet member for transport, said Getting About is the “biggest ever” travel awareness campaign to be rolled out across Bournemouth.

He said: “We’re all motivated by different factors when it comes to choosing how to travel around town – whether it’s to school, work or for leisure purposes.

“Some of us opt for convenience and jump in our cars whilst others make choices based on lifestyle and prefer to cycle, walk or take the bus.

“Getting About is a real opportunity to change how we view travel in Bournemouth and will provide us with a platform whereby we can encourage people to try alternatives to the car.”

At the launch there will be free giveaways, demos and taster sessions with people of all ages and abilities invited to have a go on the wide selection of bikes, 'megabikes', pedal-powered Scalextric racing games and pedal-powered smoothie makers.

The Getting About scheme aims to encourage more people to move away from using their cars alone by choosing to walk, cycle, use public transport and car share.

The Get Cycling organisation will be at the Square and The Triangle with the bikes between 10am and 4.30pm.
