ON May 20 a very special book will be published. Called Helmand, Diaries of Front-Line Soldiers, it is described as funny, heartbreaking, absorbing, sometimes shocking and above all, honest.
Without doubt, the most difficult and compelling reading will be the words of those who did not return from Afghanistan. They include Lt John Thornton, 22, whose account of his time in Helmand features in the book.
John’s diaries were found by his mum and dad among his possessions, returned to them after his death, five years ago this very day.
We have covered many stories about the work of the John Thornton Young Achievers Foundation in that time.
JTYAF’s work in helping so many youngsters fulfil their dreams and realise their ambition is a remarkable testament to John and to his parents Peter and Linda.
We send them every good wish, today of all days.
