A SAFETY warning has been issued after a man became stuck up to his waist in mud off the Dorset coast.

Other walkers continued crossing the same area of mud at Lulworth Cove even after the man was rescued on Saturday afternoon.

A member of the public called the Coastguard after the man, in his early 20s, became stuck at around 3pm on Saturday.

Lulworth Coastguard Rescue Team tended to the man while Dorset Fire and Rescue’s mud team worked on freeing him with the aid of water lances.

The man was then taken across the bay to a waiting ambulance by Weymouth’s inshore lifeboat.

Portland Coastguard watch manager Ros Evans said: “As the inshore lifeboat left Lulworth Cove to return to Weymouth, they reported that a number of people were walking over exactly the same area of mud.

“I urge people to be very careful in the Lulworth Cove area to avoid patches of mud. Becoming stuck is a cold, wet and distressing experience.

“If you do become stuck, spread your weight as much as possible and try to stay as calm as possible. Call 999 and ask for the Coastguard.
