PLANS to build a new Asda superstore in Blandford have been given the green light by district councillors.

Despite a recommendation from planners to reject the proposals at the meeting of the district council’s development management committee on Tuesday, councillors backed the plans.

The support is subject to conditions that will come before the next meeting on April 23.

The proposal includes a retail superstore, petrol station, cafe and business units on land between the bypass and Shaftesbury Lane on the northern edge of the town.

Many residents turned out to support the application at the meeting, and councillors heard there was public support for the superstore. A petition circulated to back the development gathered 276 signatures.

Resident Doreen Preston said she feels Asda would bring employment to the town, with 300 jobs set to be created, adding: “It would bring competition for Tesco and residents would benefit.

“Motorists have to pay more for their fuel at Tesco Blandford compared with Tesco stores in Poole and Bournemouth.”

Asda will contribute £575,000 towards Blandford if the supermarket is accepted.
