A WOMAN who was once told she may never walk again is walking more than 60 miles for charity.
Bev Allertson, 33, was left with a severe head injury, multiple breaks to her lower right leg and a cervical spine fracture when she was hit by a car in 2002.
Hospital staff believed she would need a carer due to the severity of her brain injury, but Bev, who now works as a care assistant herself at Care South’s Queensmead care home in Christchurch, made a remarkable recovery.
She is now taking part in the London to Brighton Challenge, walking 62.5 miles to raise money for the charity Headway, who supported her as she recovered from her accident.
To prepare, Bev, who lives in Wimborne, has been walking long distances locally, such as the 21 miles from Sandbanks to Hengistbury Head, with a friend who is also taking part in the challenge.
She is expecting to complete the event in 30 hours.
She said: “Training is hard work, but this is my chance to give back to the charity that has helped me so much.
“Without Headway’s support after my accident, my recovery would have been much slower.
“I’m so grateful for all the support that I’ve received and want to thank everyone who has donated.”
