THE end of the football season was celebrated in style on Sunday at a disability football tournament in Bournemouth.

Youngsters and adults from far and wide came along to the Littledown Centre for the special event organised by the locally-based Steve Bernard Foundation.

There were 250 participants involved in the Ability Counts tournament, which is one of the charity’s annual events.

The Steve Bernard Foundation was set-up in memory of the affectionately-named Stevie B following a fatal car accident in November 2005.

Following his death, his family and friends were inundated with support and donations, leading to the establishment of the charity, which raises money for sporting projects across Bournemouth and Dorset.

Tony Bernard, Steve’s father and managing director of the charity said: “It’s been a brilliant day.

“Kids and adults with different levels of disability have all been taking part in the under-12s, under-16s and senior championship teams.

“We’ve had 17 teams here from Brentford, Andover, Winchester and other places.”

The AFC Bournemouth team won the senior championship with Basingstoke Strikers taking the senior league title.

In the under-16s, Four Clubs United from Andover took the championship with Feltham Bees winning the league and in the under-12s category, Four Clubs United won the league while AFC Bournemouth’s team took the championship.

Tony added: “All the fundraising we do, helps us to put on events like this.

“And we’re putting back into the local community which is brilliant. It’s great to be able to give something back.

“It was a very humbling day seeing all the players with varying disabilities just getting on with playing football with big smiles on their faces.”

He also thanked sponsors InExcess, Green Goals and Star Soccer Supplies for their support as well as the 12 referees who had given their time for free.
