SCOTT Mitchell has followed in some illustrious footsteps by triumphing in the Hampshire Open today.
The Bransgore-based thrower defeated Paul Gibbs 6-4 in the final to claim the silverware in the prestigious event, which was held at the Novotel Hotel Southampton and attracted around 400 competitors.
England international Mitchell, who also represents Dorset, stormed into a 4-0 lead before Gibbs hit back to level the scores.
But Mitchell, one of the leading and most popular players on the BDO circuit, held his nerve to claim the crown for the first time in his career, emulating former world champion Les Wallace and ex-world championship runner-up Ronnie Baxter.
Mitchell has been in good form since boosting his confidence with his first win in four appearances at the Lakeside world championships in January.
